Hotel giant Travelodge has acquired the small hotel Kent International in Ramsgate following its fall into receivership.
One of the largest budget hotel chains in the country, Travelodge has been on the hunt for a base in the area for some time.
Travelodge's UK development director, Tony O'Brien, said, “We have long coveted a site in Ramsgate and when we were informed that the Kent International had gone into receivership we acted immediately.”
It has leased the hotel from Morden College trustees, who purchased the hotel from previous owner Rosslane Investments following its fall into receivership.
“Located on Harbour Parade the hotel is in a prime location and, following the £2 million refurbishment we are undertaking, I am sure it will quickly become one of the most popular hotels in Ramsgate,” added O'Brien.
The former Kent International hotel has now been closed to guests until next summer in order to allow extensive renovation and refurbishment to take place.
Currently, it comprises 57 bedrooms, a restaurant, banqueting suite, two bars and three meeting rooms. Its new owners plan to transform public areas into new bedrooms to take the total number of guest rooms to 68. The hotel chain will also create a new cafe and additional bar area.
Bob Bayford, Thanet council Councillor said, “We're delighted to see a national brand like Travelodge coming to Ramsgate.”
Travelodge currently operates 452 hotels across the UK, a figure it is planning to expand to 1,000 by 2020.
