The largest hotel and restaurant company in the UK, Whitbread, has made a strategic acquisition in order to grow its Premier Inn brand.
The firm has acquired three commercial premises in Yorkshire which it plans to transform into Premier Inns over the next three years.
Among the leasehold premises involved in the acquisition deal are Whitehall Road and Hepworth House in Leeds and a further property next to Harrogate International Centre. The purchases will bring Whitbread closer to hitting its target of 65,000 hotel bedrooms in the UK over the next five years.
The 107-bedroom hotel in Harrogate is slated to open as a Premier Inn at some point next year. Its location as part of the Harrogate International Centre's extension will mark Whitbread's first foray into the conference centre sector.
Hepworth House, which is a former office, will be converted into a 131-bedroom hotel and is tipped to open in 2012. The new-build 130-bedroom Leeds Whitehall Road premises will be converted into a mixed-use hotel and office development and will open to the public in 2014.
Senior acquisition manager for Whitbread hotels and restaurants, Kevin Murray, told Big Hospitality, “In April, Whitbread announced that it was stepping up the rate of growth for Premier Inn. We said we wanted to increase our expansion plans by 50 per cent because of our confidence in the product and because of the way our customers continue to demand more locations."
“These three new hotels in Yorkshire are perfect examples of that strategy in action – and there’s more to come,” added Mr Murray.
