Christie-Elite Nurseries Ltd, a leading UK grower of commercial trees, has been put up for sale, with offers of over £3 million being sought for the business. The company, which specialises in broadleaf varieties and conifers used in timber production, currently has turnover of around £1.8 million. Established in 1819, the firm produces trees for forestry, woodland and hedging and ships to clients across the UK and Europe.
The business is based in Moray, Scotland and has production volume of between 6 million and 8 million trees per year, with a landholding of around 53.3 acres freehold and around 109 acres leasehold. The sale includes a stock of finished trees on order, as well as growing trees at various development stages.
The firm has significant built assets, including a steel portal frame storage shed with cold stores and offices measuring approximately 50mx24m and a steel portal frame grading shed with a roof-mounted 50kW solar panel system measuring around 36mx24m.
Other assets including a range of polytunnels, many of which are heated and equipped with irrigation and drainage, and various modular buildings, including stores and the business’ principle office building. The site also include a B-listed detached house, which is in need of renovation. The business is described as being located in a desirable and accessible area, with the freehold land on the site largely classified as grade 2 by the James Hutton Institute.
The sale is being handled by Galbraith partner Tom Stewart, who commented: “Christie-Elite is renowned for the quality of its trees and has an outstanding reputation based on over 200 years of experience.”
“For sale as a going concern, this is a rare opportunity to acquire a successful business in the flourishing forestry sector. Timber is in huge demand globally and in the UK we currently import 80 per cent of our timber, so there is enormous potential to meet domestic and international demand. In addition, government targets for new tree planting and increased provision of hedgerows on farmland further boosts demand for premium growing trees.”
“Christie-Elite has a significant range of bespoke buildings, plant and machinery in addition to the landholding, which is highly productive. The purchasers could potentially further develop the business, subject to the necessary planning consents.”
