Apple Central Taxis, a North Devon-based business operating about 220 cars from Weston-super-Mare, has purchased two rival Exeter-based firms Gemini and Capital Taxis.
The two acquired businesses are to merge, and a new company name is yet to be decided on. Gemini runs over 100 cars from its South Street base, and Capital operates a 90-car fleet from St David’s Station.
Both of the strongly positioned car firms are to continue operating under their present brands, with a gradual merger to occur over the next few months. Once merged the intention is to dominate cab services across Exeter, Cranbrook and East Devon.
Gemini’s business development manager Steve Screech said that current staff would keep their jobs and the merger may well see additional jobs created.
A newly enlarged fleet of 200 cars will enable the merged company to better meet the cab service needs of Exeter.
“The benefits to the customer will be enormous as we will have more cars, more drivers, more phone lines and increased levels of staff to handle the extra volume of calls,” he told the Express & Echo.
The deal is not the first time Apple Central Taxis has bought a rival. Apple Cabs purchased Central Taxis in 1997, and chose to keep both names to ensure its regular customers could still order services from their familiar cab company.
Apple Central’s area manager Wayne Michael said: “We are very pleased at the merger. It makes sense for us because these are two very good, well-run companies and together it means a better service for customer in and around Exeter.”
