The 4.5-acre Bakers Quay development site in Gloucester is up for sale, sparking a rush of interest from commercial property developers and hotel chains.
The derelict land, which has been an eyesore in the local area for years, now has 18 different groups expressing an interest in acquiring part of the site. The Bakers Quay owner, Dick Bishop, told This is Gloucestershire that the site could now be sold off in sections thanks to the level of interest.
Bishop told the publication, “There has been a hell of a lot of interest, we've had 18 enquiries in the last month. The land is for sale, either as a whole or in bits. I'm still optimistic about the future of the land.
“The signs have gone up because I want people to see that it is still for sale. Make no mistake about it, we are fishing for interest,” he added.
The local council is keen to see the development land sold off as it is classed as being of 'vital' importance to the future of Gloucester Docks (pictured), which it sits alongside.
Leader of Gloucester City Council, Councillor Paul James, said, “It does detract from the rest of the regeneration that has taken place at Gloucester Quays and the sooner we see some action there the better. We know that times are still difficult economically, so it is encouraging there have been so many expressions of interest."
