Following recent reports that the sale of the famous BBC Television Centre was to be shelved, the BBC has now confirmed that the sale is now definitely going ahead.
Plans to sell off the 14-acre Shepherd’s Bush site were first announced in 2007, in line with the BBC's plans to relocate to Salford, Manchester. Now, the broadcasting company has instructed Lambert Smith Hampton, the commercial property consultants, to find a buyer for the site.
Head of BBC Workplace, Chris Kane, told the BBC, “Our key objective is to maximise value to the BBC. With high investor demand for commercial property in London and shortage of landmark sites as distinctive as the Television Centre, we anticipate strong competition for both conventional and innovative proposals.”
The site – which currently houses more than 5,000 staff – has produced TV shows including Blue Peter, Doctor Who and Fawlty Towers since 1960.
BBC Sport, children’s programmes and BBC Breakfast will be relocated to Salford, whilst BBC News will move to a new base in central London. Any parties interested in acquiring the Shepherd’s Bush site are being asked to register their interest before 1 July 2011.
