The business and assets of Alufold Direct Limited, a Lancashire-based manufacturer of aluminium window and door systems, have been acquired out of administration by Unique Window Systems.
Founded in 2014 and employing around 100 staff, Alufold operated from a manufacturing and customer site in Blackburn. The site features a state-of-the-art Aluminium Glazing Design Centre, as well as a showroom, technical support hub and trade counter.
During the calendar year 2023, the company generated turnover of £13.8 million. However, this was down from £17 million in 2022, while its pre-tax losses increased slightly from close to £1 million to £1.1 million.
The firm experienced significant financial pressures which resulted in the collapse of a planned sale process. Efforts by directors to secure alternative funding were unsuccessful and they concluded that the business could not continue trading in its current form.
Mark Hodgett and Philip Armstrong of FRP Advisory were subsequently appointed as joint administrators of Alufold Direct on June 10 and began the process of seeking a buyer for its business and assets.
The joint administrators have now completed a sale to Leicester-based UPVC and aluminium windows, doors and curtain walling fabricator Unique Window Systems. The acquisition of Alufold’s cutting-edge machinery at its Blackburn-plant presented an attractive opportunity for Unique to expand its presence in the North.
Unique joint Managing Director Sunil Patel said that the company was in a strong position to invest after increasing its turnover to £45 million and that the acquisition of Alufold’s assets “gives us the opportunity to further boost our aluminium capabilities.”
He continued: "With more companies being forced to close their doors in ongoing difficult market conditions, we are particularly pleased that the acquisition will help us grow further and retain capacity in the industry.”
Patel added that, amid increasing demand for aluminium window and doors, it was “a great time” for the company to expand its geographic footprint.
