Camden Council has called for a mass asset disposal of several buildings and plots of land, in an effort to pump money back into schools in the area.
The portfolio of properties to be sold off includes a swathe of workshops on Carol Street, Camden Town, St Martin’s Community Centre, as well as a photographer’s studio. The move would force several businesses to relocate.
It is thought the council can anticipate generating millions of pounds from the sale to a property developer, as the site is a prime location for an apartment complex.
Council bosses attributed the decision to sell parts of the council’s property portfolio to the government’s abandonment of the school repair programme last year.
Labour councillor Thomas Neumark is in favour of the plans, providing that a small green space is protected and that the community centre is given new premises on Plender Street to move into.
“Camden does provide a lot of business space, an awful lot compared to other local authorities, but we have to look at how the council is going to pay to repair our housing and schools stock.” Mr Neumark said.
The councillors at Camden Council are to vote on the plans in the next few weeks.
