Two well-known pubs in Cardiff have been put up for sale due to a decline in customer numbers.
SA Brain, a brewery based in the Welsh capital, has put The Westgate, in the Riverside area of the city and, The Grange, in Grangetown, on the market.
Reports from Wales Online confirmed the sale but noted that prices for the properties, both of which include first-floor living accommodation, are only available upon request of the selling agents.
Among local residents there is some concern that the pubs will be bought up only for them to be put to alternative uses or turned into residential housing by developers. Grangetown councillor Ashley Govier told the news outlet: “It's sad to see any local business closing down in the district and we are doing all we can to keep the area alive.”
A spokesman for the brewery, meanwhile, noted that the decision to sell was due to the “insufficient custom to sustain the businesses going forward”.
He added: “The Grange sits in our tenanted division and despite being advertised ‘To Let’ for some time, no interest has been shown from potential operators to run it.”
Buyers are thought likely to be attracted to the turnaround potential of the two businesses, with the Westgate's location of particular interest due to the fact that it is close to the Cardiff Castle and the Millennium Stadium, now known as Principality Stadium.
