A Cornwall guest house is for sale after its owners experienced a drop in business, death threats and a costly legal battle after refusing entry to a gay couple.
Christian couple Peter and Hazelmary Bull are selling their seven-bedroom business after their beliefs regarding gay or unmarried couples fired back at them.
Their viewpoints came to light in the media when civil partners Steven Preddy and Martin Hall were rejected from the Chymorvah Hotel in Marazion, Cornwall in 2008.
To pay for the legal fees incurred from the illegal rejection of the couple, including a £3,600 bill to the affected couple, the Bulls are selling their business for £750,000 to address the issue in court. The Bulls had taken the matter to the Supreme Court, and were told they would have to turn their business into a non-profit operation to keep turning gay couples away.
Since news of the situation became public the Bulls also suffered harassments including having dead rabbits nailed to their fence and bolts removed form the wheels of their car.
Mrs Bull had said: “It’s not against homosexuals but unmarried couples.”
And: “Its hard for us, this is not something we’ve made up. We have to follow the beliefs of the Bible and the God we love and serve.”
One reviewer on TripAdvisor described the guest house as ‘quite old, shabby, ‘tired’ and ‘not particularly clean anywhere’.
Needless to say a buyer will have to transform the establishment and its chintzy furnishings to ensure the site has a fresh start untainted by previous legal issues.
