The only pub on the Scottish island of Colonsay is up for sale after the laird of the island confirmed that he is looking to move the business on.
Laird Alex Howard has co-owned the business with three friends for eight years after he saved the pub from closure. However, he has now told locals that he's looking to sell the establishment. The business has a price tag of £545,000.
'The Colonsay' is the only pub on the island. Its nearest competitor is in Oban, a two-hour ferry trip away.
The island community is small at around 120 people and discussions are currently underway to see if the inhabitants can group together and buy the pub. David Johnston, chairman of the island steering group, spoke to The Scotsman: “We have formed a committee under the auspices of the island development company to look at the possibility of putting together a bid. It’s at a very early stage at the moment – we are just looking at the possibility.”
He added that it will be “some time” before the group knows if it is in any position to make a bid.
The laird's wife, Jane Howard, told the paper that the pair are “completely supportive” of selling the business to the community, but added that the pub would also be a good opportunity for a couple to take over and run.
The pub plays an important part of the island's tourism-based economy, providing walkers and other visitors with a welcome resting point, as well as offering locals a focal point to their community.
