Listed UK-based food group Cranswick has bought the entire share capital of JSR Genetics from JSR Farms.
JSR Genetics is a leading UK-based pig genetics supplier and commercial pig producer, located in East Yorkshire and is renowned for its innovative genetic solutions for cost effective pig production. It is a longstanding supplier to Cranswick.
The company, alongside JSR Farms, is owned by the Rymer Family. The two businesses have been run side by side, with all the wheat, barley and rye grown fed to the pig herd, the straw used for bedding and in return the organic manures returned to the land to improve soil health and crop yields.
According to Pig World JSR Genetics is the exclusive distributor for Netherlands-based Topigs Norsvin's genetics in the UK, with 8,000 high health nucleus and multiplication sows. In addition, JSR Farms has more than 3,000 commercial sows, producing more than 2,000 pigs per week for slaughter.
JSR Genetics was founded by John Sykes Rymer in 1982, then under the name JSR Healthbred. Rymer had founded JSR Farms in 1958 and by then was an established farmer with a rapidly growing business.
The Cranswick acquisition includes the pig genetics and pig farming operations of JSR Farms Limited.
Cranswick, as reported by Pig World, said that it would be 'business as usual' for JSR's existing customers, but it would look to invest in and grow the genetics business. JSR's 75 staff will also move over in the deal.
The acquisition also includes eight freehold sites.
Adam Couch, CEO of Hull-headquartered Cranswick, said: "This acquisition increases the scale of our indoor pig production, further securing supply for our customers' pork requirements. The addition of an integrated pig genetics supply chain will allow us to drive ongoing improvements in production efficiency, meat quality, animal health and robustness, for the long-term benefit of our customers and the UK consumer."
