Property, construction and hospitality giant The Arora Group has completed the acquisition of a design-led hotel group that operates sites at Gatwick Airport and in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter.
Bloc Hotels is a specialist in developing, owning and operating hotels in prime locations. The company operates the 245-room Bloc Gatwick at Gatwick Airport’s South Terminal and the 105-room Bloc Birmingham in the city’s Jewellery Quarter.
The firm, which generated turnover of £12.3 million and an operating profit of £2.9 million in the year to March 31 2024, also owns a further two sites in the UK that have not yet been developed.
Bloc Hotels Managing Director Rob Morgan said that the acquisition would bring “operational strength and experience to scale the business” and usher in “a new phase of growth, including the upcoming developments of Bloc Grand Central and Bloc Glasgow.”
Surinder Arora, Chief Executive and chairman of the Arora Group, said that the deal continued the group’s efforts to “build a diverse portfolio of assets across the UK”, with the acquisition of Bloc Gatwick enabling it “to further cement our presence at the airport, complementing our already successful Hilton, Sofitel and Crawley properties."
Arora Group was advised on the deal by a team from Dentons, led by Real Estate & Hotels partner Simon Masri, who said that the deal reinforced Arora’s “position as a market leader in the hospitality sector”.
Arora Group was initially known as a specialist owner and operator of airport hotels, but expanded into city centre hotels with the opening of the InterContinental London – The O2 in 2017. Recently, the group has diversified into country house hotels with Fairmont Windsor Park and Luton Hoo Hotel, Golf and Spa, and other real estate assets including shopping centres.
