Huddled Group has acquired the UK trading assets and stock of Motatos, following the company's decision to exit the UK market. Swedish-based D2C (direct-to-consumer) e-commerce retailer Matsmart-Motatos has decided to exit the UK with immediate effect in order to focus on its core markets in the DACH and Nordic regions.
Motatos is dedicated to tackling global food waste and sells food and other consumer products that are at risk of being wasted at discounted prices. The firm launched in the UK in June 2022 and generated a strong position in the market, with around 10,000 new customers signed up each month and over 1,000 tonnes of food and consumer products recirculated alongside its customers and suppliers.
Huddled Group, the owner of Discount Dragon, has acquired the firm’s UK business for an undisclosed sum. The acquisition is seen as complementary to the Discount Dragon brand, which also sells short-dated or surplus stock.
Describing the businesses as a “natural fit”, Huddled Group Chairman Martin Higginson said: "At a time when consumers are struggling with the cost of living and looking to seek better value, we believe we are well positioned to offer everyday essentials at heavily discounted prices to the mass market."
Motatos Chief Executive Peter Beckius added: "As a zero waste business, it is of course important to us to make sure that the food and household products we have in stock will not be discarded, but find their way to the market and eventually peoples' homes.”
