Wakefield-based machinery manufacturer Group Rhodes has acquired BJD Crushers Limited, a Barnsley-based manufacturer of size reduction machinery. The acquisition forms part of Rhodes’ strategy of expanding its materials handling operations.
BJD Crushers, previously British Jeffrey Diamond, manufactures an extensive array of materials processing equipment and high-capacity crushers for controlling product size. The firm also has a strong aftermarket offering for double roll crushers and primary reduction machinery, as well as conducting export sales in sectors including aggregates and recycling.
The deal complements the portfolios of two Group Rhodes subsidiaries, Craven Fawcett and Hallamshire Engineering Services. These two businesses manufacture machinery and spare parts for the materials handling and heavy clay sectors.
Group Rhodes Chief Executive Mark Ridgway OBE DL said: “This is an important acquisition which forms part of a group strategy to strengthen our materials handling division to operate alongside our major metalforming and heavy ceramic operations.”
“BJD is a strong strategic fit for us and the strengths of the combined operation will drive significant value for customers. It will help further develop our vision to be a major player in the UK material handling sector. We have an exciting future ahead of us.”
Group Rhodes said that the acquisition is expected to imminently create at least one role, business development manager, along with a further nine roles over the next two years. BJD’s Managing Director Peter Mills will remain as a Group Rhodes consultant over the coming months and the company will continue to operate from its existing headquarters in Barnsley until the end of 2023.
After this, its operations are expected to transfer to a purpose-built Group Rhodes factory in Calder Vale, Wakefield. Group Rhodes is planning additional investment and recruitment, both to support BJD and to strengthen the synergies provided by Hallamshire Engineering’s materials handling operations.
