The historic Montpellier Lodge in Montpellier Gardens, Cheltenham, has been put up for sale by the local council.
According to This Is Gloucestershire and The Echo, the former public park-keeper's residence has already attracted a flurry of bids, with the current highest bidder keen to transform the building into an up-market bistro restaurant.
Councillor John Rawson (LD, St Peter's), Cabinet member for built environment, said, “The biggest bid is for a restaurant, which would create another attraction in the Montpellier area and we think that's well worth looking at.
“The building has been surplus to requirements for some time and it seems to me that the best way of ensuring that it is protected is to provide a productive use, which is why we put it on the market,” he added.
If the new bistro – which is thought to be an independent rather than a chain – goes ahead, it will also comprise a deli. Whilst the exact price has not been revealed, the highest bidder is thought to have offered more than £250,000 for the commercial property.
Dr Brian Bracegirdle, Friends of Montpellier Bandstand and Gardens chairman, told the newspapers, “I would rather it was used for something apposite than it being left derelict.We hope that the refurbishments are sensitive to the park and we are open-minded about the plan.”
