A historic 17th century house and gardens that now operates as a popular wedding and conference venue has been put on the market by the local authority that owns it.
Wakefield Council in Yorkshire has announced that it is selling Grad 2-listed Woolley Hall on a 250-year lease, on the condition that it continues to operate as a wedding and conference facility.
The Yorkshire Evening Post has reported that the council is taking the action as part of a major cost-cutting drive and that offloading it would allow them to plough the money they spend on it into more crucial services.
A report on the sale, which is due to be presented to Wakefield Council’s cabinet committee next Tuesday, states, “The saving on annual running costs supports the protection of key front line services to the public.”
The council’s cabinet member for corporate performance, Graham Stokes, said it would be a new future for the hall.
“We are committed to keeping the hall in public use and to protect the jobs of the staff and honour existing bookings,” he explained. “The option of disposing of the hall through a conditional, very long lease means we can do all that and Woolley Hall will still be available for people to use and enjoy.”
The facility has 20 acres of grounds and is an example of early Jacobean architecture, having originally been built in 1635. It was renovated around 1800 by Sir Jeffry Wyatville, who also remodeled Windsor Castle.
This is a unique investment opportunity in Ipswich featuring a freehold property with consistent business turnover and two self-contained flats above.
