SeeSaw, a UK-based service that enables people to watch TV programmes online, has been put on the block by its telecoms parent, Arqiva.
SeeSaw was set up one year ago to satisfy consumers’ growing desire to watch TV shows on their computers. It shows all programmes from the BBC, Channel 4 and Channel 5, amongst others.
SeeSaw has been struggling more recently as its competitors, including BBC iPlayer and Channel 4 On Demand, also allow viewers to catch up with all their favourite shows for free. SeeSaw has a free service but is peppered with ads. Its NonStop service, which is advertisement-free, costs £2.99 per month.
It has a good model, but other free online viewing services have made SeeSaw less popular, according to Giles Cottle, senior analyst at Informa Telecoms & Media.
He added: “However, the sale could provide a platform for an international company to gain a foothold in the on-demand market.”
Arqiva has given advisory firm Ingenious Media the task of selling the business. A sale price for the business was not disclosed.
Potential bidders are said to include Hulu, the online US video streamer; Telefonica, the Spanish telecoms company; and the Europe-based Canal Plus Group.
