An independent subsidiary of the Pelican Group, Sleekside Ltd, has bought out of administration the publishing company Barker Brooks Media Ltd.
The Harrogate-based publishing company was established in 1999 and provided a broad range of marketing support, publishing and design services, and events management. However, financial difficulties forced the company to call in administrators from Begbies Traynor.
Fortunately, a quick turnaround meant that the business did not suffer and the sale to Sleekside was secured on the same day as the company entered administration, 9 November.
Julian Pitts of Begbies Traynor explained the benefits of the smooth transition in Harrogate News: “The quick turnaround of this deal helped preserve the company’s high quality client list by allowing a continuity of supply and, therefore, preserving the goodwill of the business. It is great news that this sale gives the business and its staff a future within a complementary publishing company.”
Helen Bates, from Leeds law firm Clarion which helped handle the sale, added that it is clear that “despite its financial difficulties, Barker Brooks had a viable business with some valuable assets in terms of its established magazine brands and events”.
Barker Brooks is primarily known for its portfolio of business magazines, which includes Claims magazine for the personal injury sector and the Leeds & Yorkshire Lawyer. The business also provides marketing services for big names including BDO LLP and the British Racing Drivers' Club.
