Two of the three pubs located in East Hendred, Oxfordshire, have been put onto the market following rental and beer price increases.
The owner of The Wheatsheaf Inn and The Plough, pub giant Greene King, is reportedly on the hunt for a new licensee to take over the former, whilst the lease of the latter is for sale.
The former landlord of The Wheatsheaf Inn, Adrian Combrink, told the Oxford Mail that he felt forced to move on due to the high prices being charged for beer and rent by Greene King. “Potential tenants couldn’t sustain the rent. Greene King are shooting themselves in the foot.
“And the only ones taking the knock are the people at the end of the line – myself and the punters because they are having to pay more for a pint,” added Mr Combrink.
The rent has risen from £36,000 a year to £45,000 in the seven years that Mr Combrink has been running the pub, which includes a £7,500 fee which was levied in order to be able to purchase spirits and wines from other firms.
Alan Valentine, former landlord of The Plough, put the lease onto the market two months ago, citing 'horrendous' beer prices.
Chairman of the White Horse branch of the Campaign for Real Ale (Camra), Neil Crook, said, “Camra has been campaigning for reform of large pub companies and their business practices, because too many of the UK’s pubs are blighted by their actions.”
