South East Water is preparing to put one of the largest UK fisheries on the market this month, while other options being explored with the staff of the Kent fishery include a potential management buy-out.
The firm aims to sell the site for between £2 million and £3 million. In addition to the fishery, the asset package for sale includes two cottages, seven lakes and a section of the River Stour with fishing rights.
South East Water inherited the site as part of a recent merger with Mid Kent Water, which had developed part of the Chilham Estate into a fishery in 1991. The site had been owned and used by other water related companies in the past.
The two water businesses had assessed the business activities after the merger, says asset director Paul Seeley. Reports indicated that South East Water considers the fishery to be non-core to the rest of the business.
Chris Logsdon, manager at Mid Kent Fisheries since 1991, said he had been granted first refusal on the potential sale. He is also quite certain that a buy-out deal will take place.
The fishery had been the home of Two Tone, a mirror carp believed to be one of Britain’s largest freshwater fish, before he died in August.
