A pub that featured in the popular ITV 1980s’ drama-comedy Auf Wiedersehen, Pet is on the market for £475,000 - and a consortium of avid fans are in the running to snap it up.
The sale of the Windmill Inn, at Redmile near Grantham, was described by Savills as a “rare opportunity” to own an iconic pub. The inn, which still attracts thousands of the show’s fans every year, has had “significant interest” from a number of buyers.
Auf Wiedersehen, Pet, which ran on ITV between 1983 and 1986, returning briefly on the BBC in 2002, was about the loves, lives and adventures of seven British migrant construction workers living and working in Germany and the UK.
Known as the Barley Mow in the show, the pub was a regular stopping off point for its endearing characters, played by Tim Healy, Kevin Whately, Jimmy Nail, Gary Holton and Timothy Spall.
The pub, which comprises a brick-built, fully rendered detached property with additional first floor owners accommodation, will be offered at auction next month, unless it is sold prior, Savills said.
Which it could be. The impending sale has already caught the eye of the official Auf Wiedersehen, Pet fanclub who have set up a consortium to raise enough money to buy the property through Savills.
Fan Sara Peters said: “I want to be part of this because I've loved Auf Wiedersehen, Pet ever since it was first aired on TV. I often visit the pub with other fans and it truly means so much to me. I love the place. An Auf Wiedersehen, Pet themed pub owned by fans would be a dream come true for all involved.”
Bob Crocker, auctions director at Savills Nottingham, said: “The sale of The Windmill Inn, which is visited by thousands of fans of the show every year, presents a rare opportunity to own an iconic pub that featured heavily in an extremely popular British TV series.
“Memories of the pub will evoke a real sense of nostalgia for many, but its sale also represents a unique opportunity for those wishing to retain a successful business as well as those seeking to develop the property for residential or additional commercial use.”
The current owners of the Windmill Inn are planning to retire.
