A Grade I-listed castle in Staffordshire has come onto the market for £3 million.
Caverswall Castle is at present one of the most expensive buildings for sale in Staffordshire – second only to a Burton mansion that is for sale at £4 million.
Estate agency Strutt and Parker is handling the marketing of the castle, which was bought by owner Robin MacDonald in 2006 for £2 million.
Mr MacDonald is selling up due to his decision to move on to a new project. Works he has carried out at the castle include the turrets, so it requires no additional work to live there.
The castle has 18 bedrooms, nine reception rooms, a billiard room, a library with a Wedgwood ceiling, 13 bathrooms, a moat and an old dungeon.
Agent Belinda Hutchinson-Smith said they have had many inquiries already, from businessmen including an American, “who wants to own a piece of English heritage”.
“Although there are a lot of bedrooms, it is a very liveable house. It has got the gravitas of a grand house but the intimacy of a family home”, she added.
Mr MacDonald is no stranger to the inside of a court, having been accused of breaching planning rules to hold parties, corporate events and wedding receptions at his castle on numerous occasions.
He has pleaded guilty to six counts so far and is waiting for an upcoming hearing regarding nine similar offences he has been accused of.
