The Agora shopping centre in Wolverton, Milton Keynes, has been placed on the market by its owners Leyland Holding Company.
Leyland has brought in property consultant Kirkby & Diamond to handle the marketing for the site as a “development opportunity” with the aim of grabbing the interest of developers to buy the centre and build new shops.
The Wolverton and Greenleys Town Council hopes that, in the long-term, new retailers will set up shop in the centre and to “reconnect Radcliffe Street” to become a “new heart for Wolverton Town Centre”.
Martin Wakley from Wolverton Town Team, which represents local businesses, said: “Wolverton is very much open for business despite the Agora being put up for sale, and we look forward to welcoming shoppers in the run up to Christmas and promoting local trade.”
This follows years of uncertainty and debate about the future of the shopping centre.
The news of the sale comes after the Agora Development Brief was formally taken up by Milton Keynes Council last month alongside continuing work on the Wolverton Town Centre Neighbourhood Plan by locals.
Marie Osborne, from Future Wolverton, commented: “We are entering a period of rapid change in Wolverton which is bound to have an impact on the community and businesses across the Town Centre.
“However, local organisations are determined to work together to ensure that local businesses survive this period of change and that the community are kept fully informed of what is happening.”
