The historic Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Edinburgh has been put up for sale with property experts expecting it to go for millions of pounds.
Fondly known as the ‘Sick Kids’, the hospital, designed by George Washington Browne, has been caring for children and young people in the Lothians and beyond for more than 150 years.
The four-acre site, on Sciennes Road, first opened in 1895 but will soon become defunct as the Sick Kids prepares to move to a new £150 million facility in Edinburgh's Little France area in spring 2018.
David Alexander, managing director of DJ Alexander estate agents, told the Scotsman: “It’s a prime location. This is a cracking site for residential development. There will be people queuing up to buy it.”
The sale includes the category B listed hospital building, 23 terraced villas, several flats as well as land which has potential for new-build development.
David Fraser, residential land and development partner at sellers Ryden, said: “The Royal Hospital for Sick Children is one of Edinburgh’s most iconic properties.
“Ryden considers it a privilege to be instructed on the sale of the property and we look forward to the challenge of securing a successful sale of the site.
“We expect it to attract considerable interest from local, national and international developers as market demand for development opportunities within Edinburgh city centre is currently strong.”
