Hotel operator the Edwardian Group has acquired a Grade II-listed building in Manchester, the Theatre Royal.
The theatre opened in Peter Street in 1845 and is said to have been the inspiration for the exterior of London's Royal Opera House in Coven Garden.
In its time the Manchester building has been used as a cinema, nightclub and bingo hall but it has been left empty for a number of years now.
The Edwardian Group is planning to restore the building and develop it as a complementary business to its existing Radisson Blu hotel in the old Free Trade Hall next door.
Robert Morley, a director with the hotel group, commented on the purchase, noting that the group is planning to build new suites and larger conference rooms. “We are considering all sorts of options for the space and will also be in discussion with English Heritage and the city regarding how the building is developed,” he said.
