The former War Office building in Whitehall is to be sold for use as a commercial property.
Built in 1901, the building housed the offices of the likes of Winston Churchill and David Lloyd-George. It was hit by German bombs during World War II, but although one person was killed, the building was relatively unscathed.
The building subsequently closed for several years, but was refurbished in the mid-1980s and reopened in 1992 when it was used as the new headquarters of the defence intelligence staff
A number of civil servants are working there at the moment but they will be moved to the Ministry of Defence (MoD) main building across the road next year when the sale goes through.
Whoever buys the building will own more than 1,000 rooms, spread out over 2.5 miles of corridors. The Central London location is likely to make the commercial property an interesting acquisition for a hotel or property developer.
This is not the first Government building to be put on the market recently. The MoD has also confirmed that the abandoned Brompton Road Tube station is up for sale, while the Home Office is to sell Bramshill House in Hampshire, which has previously been used as a police training college.
