A hotel that dates back to Tudor times and is believed to have been given as a gift by Elizabeth I to her favourite, Robert Dudley, has been put on the market for £935,000.
The Great House in Laleston in South Wales is now a luxury hotel with 13 bedrooms. The Grade II listed building was originally built around 1550 and was extended over the following two centuries.
Owners Stephen and Norma Bond bought the building in 1985 when it was almost derelict and have turned it into a 3-star hotel. The building retains original features including inglenook fireplaces, oak beams, mullioned windows and flagstone floors.
The hotel also has a Well Health spa with a sauna, jacuzzi and treatment rooms. It is known for its bar and restaurant and is also a wedding venue. The hotel recently scooped the 2016 Hotel Restaurant of the Year Award for Wales.
Colliers International Hotels Director Peter Brunt told Wales Online: "Buyers will appreciate the care taken in the sympathetic refurbishment, and the fact that Stephen and Norma have continued to keep the hotel looking smart and contemporary right up to today."
The hotel’s bedrooms are divided between the Great House and the old coach house. They are all individually designed, some with four poster beds and others with sleigh beds.
Mr Brunt said: "I believe the rich history of The Great House will provide an additional draw for buyers already attracted by its impressive sales figures and its well-placed location equidistant between Cardiff and Swansea.”
The hotel will continue to operate as normal until a buyer is found.
