A castle in Cumbria, run as a hotel for two decades, has been put up for sale with a price tag of £2.5 million.
Built in 1841 as a country residence for a Victorian gentleman, Augill Castle is an imposing property set in 12 acres near Kirkby Stephen.
Simon and Wendy Bennett have run it as a hotel for the past 20 years but have decided to take a step back from operations now.
Mr Bennett said: “There is still huge potential here but it is time for someone else to take Augill to the next level. A spa perhaps, or a purpose-built meeting or function space. There’s potential for so much.”
The castle has 15 letting bedrooms including eight in the castle itself and a further seven located in external cottage suites and estate houses.
The inclusion of the owner's five-bed cottage in the sale will likely make this a suitable lifestyle business purchase for the right people.
Neil Thomson, who is an associate director with the selling agents Colliers International, said that the business benefits from a wide range of customers.
“The business attracts a wide ranging trade from both the private and corporate leisure sectors and is a well-established wedding and private hire venue,” he remarked. “We hope to generate considerable interest for this rare opportunity from both sectors.”
