Following the administration of the von Essen hotel owner, two of Cumbria's most exclusive hotels have been put onto the market.
Christie & Co, which is acting as administrators for von Essen, has put Sharrow Bay and The Samling Hotel up for sale. Sharrow Bay, which over looks Ullswater, has a guide price of £5 million.
The hotel was first opened in 1948, after it was transformed from a private house into a luxury hotel boasting 26 bedrooms. Well known for its luxurious rooms, lake views and top-notch cooking, The Samling was the location for Sir Paul McCartney's proposal to Heather Mills.
Celebrity favourite The Samling – which has views over Windermere – has a price tag of £6 million. The hotel has played host in the past to big stars including Tom Cruise and the Beckhams.
Administrators Christie & Co's Peter Fermoy, told the News and Star, “They are not being marketed for individual sale. In an ideal world all the hotels would be marketed as a group.
“One or two may be sold off as individual assets. We’re encouraging first bids for any, some or all of the group to come to us by July 12.
“During this entire process, the hotels will carry on operating as normal,” he added.
It has been confirmed that the first round of bidding for the two hotels will close on 12 July 2011. It looks likely that a further round will take place after that, followed by the selling procedure.
