Renowned bakery, Warbutons, is welcoming interest from companies who may want to buy its threatened Welsh factory.
The company announced last week that the plant at Rogerstone could be lost altogether - taking 114 jobs with it - unless a buyer can be found. It is understood that Brace's Bakery, which operates a plant at nearby Crumlin, has already expressed interest in taking it over.
A 90-day consultation is already underway with staff, after the Lancashire-based company said it was experiencing a surplus of capacity in its factories in Newport and Bristol. Reports on efficiency savings resulted in the proposal that the Newport plant - which opened in 2006 and makes 450,000 products every week - be let go.
The company vowed to "explore all alternatives to closure and possible redundancies".
It continued : "These alternatives may ultimately include the potential sale of the site and Warburtons welcomes the various expressions of interest it has received from a number of parties."
Brace's interest, however, comes as a particular slice of good news for the plant, and it is thought the company has already held discussons with Warburtons, unions and the Welsh Assembly Government about buying the operation.
Brace's spokesman, Scott Richardson, said, "We are growing our business and we need more people to meet our current demand."
