Pet retail chain Pets at Home has purchased Vets4Pets - a chain of 93 veterinary service providers - in a deal estimated to be worth between £30 million and £50 million.
North west-based Pets at Home plans to merge Vets4Pets’ standalone practices with its own vet brand Companion Care, which has 116 branches within Pets at Home stores. In addition Pets runs 86 in-store grooming salons under a brand called The Groom Room.
It is not clear yet whether the Pets4Vets brand will be retained or absorbed into the Companion Care brand.
Together the businesses’ pro-forma sales to the year ending 31 March will reach £100 million.
The combined 210 veterinary practices represent a small portion of the total 2,500 practices for small animals in the UK.
The deal will help reach Pets at Homes’ goal of increasing its range of services for pets and their owners in the stores, and encouraging consumers away from online shopping.
Nick Wood, the chief executive at Pets at Home said, “Part of developing a retail proposition going forward is it has to be more than product.
“In our world, services are vet services and grooming salons. If you add both of those together, it gives extra reasons as to why our customers should go to stores in the long term.”
