Two shopping centres in Scotland have been taken into administration after a fall in customers and increasing competition from rival retail complexes.
The Kyle Shopping Centre and Arran Mall, both located in Ayr town centre, are now being controlled by joint administrators Paul Dounis and Ken Pattullo of Begbies Traynor. Both centres are owned by Cairnduff Developments Ayr Limited.
The centres are still trading as normal while the administrators attempt to stimulate greater customer footfall before looking for a buyer.
They have both been hit by competition from other retail spaces such as Ayr Central Shopping Centre, Heathfield Retail Park and the Silverburn Mall in Glasgow. Despite this the administrators say the troubled pair of shopping centres still have “appeal”.
Mr Dounis said: “We will continue to trade the centres while we explore options for improving visitor numbers.
“This includes potentially reconfiguring the Kyle Centre to make it more attractive to shoppers and embarking on discussions with other large space retailers.”
Some figures in the local community believe the centres could have alternative uses, with the main aim being to attract more people. Val Russell, chief executive of Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce and Industry told the Herald Scotland: “It doesn’t have to be retail, they are both good town centre locations. We need to be willing to be more innovative on the use of town centres.”
Garry Clark, a spokesman for Scottish Chamber of Commerce noted: “We need to ensure the model for what our town centres are needs to be more relevant and updated in order to better reflect changing attitudes to how we shop and what we do with our time.”
