Chip fryer and cooking range maker Preston and Thomas is in administration and seeking a sale.
The South Wales-based family firm first took orders in March 1913 for its chip shop cooking equipment. It has installed over 11,000 cooking ranges at chip shops over the UK since World War ll.
The long serving business has recently been hit by a fall in orders from its financially stricken customers, with delayed pick-ups of purchased equipment not helping matters.
The business was launched in Cardiff on Caroline Street, when Harry Preston and Evan Tudor Thomas opened a dairy utensil shop, and has remained under joint ownership of the two families ever since. Today it is operated by Simon Preston and David Thomas.
David Hill and Steve Wade of Begbies Traynor are handling matters for the business.
Mr Hill commented: “Preston and Thomas Ltd has played a major role in British culinary culture, manufacturing the cooking equipment that millions of fish and chip shop customers have relied upon for decades.
“Having been appointed joint administrators, Mr Wade and I are looking for interested parties to acquire the business and assets of this long established and highly regarded company with the aim of securing its future.”
Preston and Thomas make various style and size ranges and frying systems for cooking fish and chips in establishments. In 2012, it made its largest range (worth £100,000) for a restaurant in Falkirk, with capacity to cook up to 240 portions of chips every seven minutes.
