The historic saddle-maker Jabez Cliff Ltd has fallen into administration after 221 years of trading.
The Black Country-based manufacturer of horse riding accessories operates under the brand name Barnsby. Andy McGill, partner at the Birmingham office of Smith & Williamson, the accountancy and investment management group, has been appointed as administrator to the company.
Administrators were called in after Jabez Cliff had been struggling against tough working conditions in recent months. Attempts to restructure the company in order to turn around the fate of the business ultimately proved unsuccessful and it subsequently ceased trading with all 26 staff losing their jobs.
All the saddles made by the company, which held a Royal Warrant as a supplier to the Queen, were hand-made. Barnsby's saddles boasts The King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery, The Household Cavalry and many elite equestrian riders among its impressive list of clients.
Administrator Andy McGill said: "The directors have worked very hard during the last six months to try and turn the business around.
It had been hoped it might be possible to boost international sales but unfortunately market conditions have proved too tough and opportunities have not matched their expectations.
"Following the closure of the business, the directors had no option but to make their 26 staff redundant and to place the business into administration.”
