Care home operator Castlebeck has entered administration after the abuse scandal uncovered at Winterbourne View and the closure of two other units resulted in trading losses at the firm.
Nationwide media attention was drawn to Winterbourne View in 2011 after hidden footage aired on a BBC documentary by Panorama revealed the punching, slapping and bullying of residents with learning disabilities that was going on. Eleven staff from the home were subsequently sentenced at Bristol Crown Court.
The administrators at Grant Thornton have been drafted in to Castlebeck, which is continuing to operate 20 hospital assessment treatment and rehabilitation centres, and residential care homes, with a total of 214 learning disability and mental health patients and residents presently being cared for.
The units are to remain operating while a buyer is sought. It is considered most likely that a purchase of the whole business will take time to achieve. The administrators have said that several interested parties in individual units have stepped forward, however.
Grant Thornton’s Daniel Smith commented: “While the board has focused on quality care provision and restoring confidence in the Castlebeck operations, the impact of two further unit closures in 2011 and reducing occupancy has significantly diluted Castlebeck’s subsequent trading capabilities.”
“A number of prospective purchasers have already shown their interest in acquiring the individual Castlebeck operating units, which will continue to operate and trade normally whilst such sales are progressed, and new owners for the operating units emerge,” he added.
The administrators are in talks with the care regulators, local authorities and other stakeholders about the administration proceedings for the firm, which is headquartered in County Durham.
The 214 residents and patients in the care of Castlebeck are to continue receiving due attention from the team of doctors, nurses, clinicians and carers, who will work with the administrators to ensure this priority of care.
