Welsh social housing specialist Green Hill Construction is set to appoint administrators this week after the company already made its workforce redundant.
The Newport-based construction firm told its staff of around 150 last week that they can no longer afford to pay their wages and that the company was going to have to enter administration. Green Hill, which was founded in 2006, has a focus on building homes for registered social landlords across Wales and the South West of England.
Since its formation, the company has received government funding totalling £146,650 to help create new jobs. Green Hill has also delivered on several multi-million pound contracts in its eight-year history, including a 32-house unit on Turner Street, Newport, and the Melin Homes project on the former Brookfield Primary School site in Cwmbran.
Although administrators have not yet been appointed, it is expected that this will happen later this week.
Speaking to the South Wales Argus, an anonymous employee explained how the events unfolded. They said: “We got called for a meeting on Friday [11 April] morning and they said the company is going into administration and we had all been made redundant.”
The company’s director Darran Watts told the same newspaper: “Green Hill Construction Ltd have filed a notice of intention to appoint an administrator – however the appointment has not yet been made.
“Given the aforementioned position and the fact that various discussions are currently ongoing regarding the future of the business it would be inappropriate for us to provide any comment at this stage.”
