Household and beauty product manufacturer Kleenese Limited has announced it has entered administration after 95 years in operation.
The firm, which employs 140 people and distributes via a network of 5,000 independent sales distributors, revealed that tough trading conditions were responsible for the decision, which was announced by the administrators during the week.
David Acland, Joint Administrator from appointed firm FRP Advisory, has suggested that a buyer will now be sought to prevent the loss of jobs and ensure the future of the company.
Encouraging possible candidates to come forward, Mr Acland said: "The business has ceased to trade but we would urge any parties interested in acquiring the business to contact us as soon as possible. In the meantime, we are assisting employees and stakeholders during this difficult period."
According to the administrators, a decision is yet to be made about the future of the company's network of self-employed distributors, who operate by delivering catalogues around the UK and Ireland and earning rewards for each sale they make.
Currently, Usdaw, the trade union for Kleeneze staff, is seeking a meeting with the administrators to discuss the protection of the company's workers during this "difficult and upsetting time". Annette Bott of Usdaw Area Organisers has suggested that all staff members are hoping the firm can be taken over quickly to avoid any disruption to their jobs.
"We are pressing the administrators to find a buyer for the company who will protect jobs and keep the business going," she added. "In the meantime we are providing our members with the support, advice and representation they need."
