British underwear manufacturer Headen and Quarmby has entered administration despite launching new lines in recent years including Mary Portas' Kinky Knickers.
Retail expert Portas launched the line back in 2012 when she championed the 79-year-old underwear factor in Middleton, Greater Manchester in her programme, Mary's Bottom Line. She reopened the factor's sewing room at the factory as part of an experiment to try and revive the country's textile industry.
A statement from Portas over the administration said: “I'm really surprised to hear that Headen and Quarmby, the business that we licensed to manufacture the brand Kinky Knickers, has gone into administration.”
She added that although she knew the business was struggling with a cash flow problem, she believed it was still a viable business.
Kerry Bailey, who is working as an administrator for the business on behalf of BDO, added that the firm was hit by a drop in post-Christmas orders from key customers, as well as a drop in sales volumes. She noted, however, that a lack of future orders is the main reason for the administration.
The administrators are looking to secure the future of the business through a sale, ether of the business or its assets.
