A buyer is being sought for Dent Ltd, a pig farming business in Cumbria with yearly sales approaching £40 million.
Administrators Adrian Berry and Clare Boardman from Deloitte were called in to the business on 2 December, and are now seeking a buyer for the previously family-owned business.
Adrian Berry told the BusinessDesk: “We will liaise closely with the company’s customers and will work with management and the contract farmers to ensure the highest standards of animal welfare are maintained.
“The business will continue to trade and a sale process undertaken, and no redundancies are planned at this stage.”
Dent has about 20,000 pigs and supplies to major retailers including Sainsbury’s, and has 67 employees.
It runs a higher welfare pig production system, that sees its pigs and sows spend time in outdoor units and spacious straw-based barns to ensure they can perform natural pig behaviours. It was rewarded with a Leadership in Pig Welfare award in 2011 at the Good Farm Animal Welfare Award in London.
It is only the pig farming aspect of Dent that has entered administration. Its dairy company North Lakes Foods Limited and haulage operations Dent Company are continuing to trade as normal.
