Cathedral Works Organisation (Chichester) Ltd, the stonemasonry firm that has worked on Buckingham Palace, has been placed in the control of administrators.
Ken Touhey of Insolvency & Recovery Ltd (IRL) and Andrew Duncan of Leonard Curtis were appointed as the joint administrators to the firm, also known as CWO, on Wednesday 5 March 2014. The administrators are to manage the affairs, business and assets of the Chichester firm.
John C Lillywhite Ltd, which is also based in Chichester and was taken over by CWO in 2012, is also in administration.
Founded in 1965, CWO specialises in historic masonry repair and restoration. One of its first projects was to restore the Norman Cathedral at Chichester in West Sussex.
In more recent years, the firm has worked to repair the Windsor Castle after it was blighted by fire, and it also restored the Eastern Arm of Chichester Cathedral’s Cloisters and St Faith’s House. CWO has won several awards to recognise its work on its projects, including Stone Federation’s yearly awards and the 2004 (industry news website) Buildings’ specialist contractor of the year award.
Other high profile project locations have included the Tower of London, Buckingham Palace and Hampton Court.
At its Chichester base, CWO has advanced production facilities to include stone cutting, turning and handling equipment. The £10 million turnover, 115-strong workforce business also has an office in London.
