Two hotels in the top English resort of Torbay that have long provided a backbone for local touring holidays have fallen into administration.
The Bute Court Hotel and the Torbay Court Hotel went into administration on March 1 and are now being run by insolvency company, Begbies Traynor. The administrators have made it clear that they are continuing to run the hotels as viable businesses and are optimistic that new owners will be found.
Begbies Traynor senior administrator, Elizabeth Marchant, said, "Anyone who calls the hotels will be told 'it is business as usual and we are still taking bookings'."
She added that the 40 staff of the two hotels have been fully informed of the situation and have been told that they will continue to be paid. She would not be drawn further, however, on what arrangements had been made and whether any jobs would be lost.
The two hotels - which are owned by Stuart Travis and managed by his wife, Jo - were run by administrators during the recession of the 1990s, before new owners stepped in and kept them in business.
Torbay's elected mayor, Nick Bye, said it was sad news, but added that he shared the administrators' optimism.
"It is always disappointing to hear of businesses going into administration but that does not mean that is the end of it," he said. "There seems to be a lot of holiday business in the Bay […] If the hotels change hands at a realistic price new owners can come in with new ideas."
