Crombie, the prestigious clothing maker owned by property entrepreneur Alan Lewis, has put the Tommy Nutter brand on the market.
Crombie is willing to either sell the clothing brand, which has not been given a guide price, or enter a partnership to develop it. The sale also includes a small number of original pieces and designs drawn by the tailor, Tommy Nutter, who died in 1992.
It is understood that several fashion and textile businesses have been informed of the sale, and that Indian and Chinese firms have shown the most interest.
“As Crombie focuses on the expansion of its own line of luxury coats and suits, Crombie feels the time is right to sell the Tommy Nutter brand outright or partner with another company to optimise it,” the firm said.
Tommy Nutter opened his shop on Savile Row in 1969. Financed by Cilla Black, the Beatles’ executive Peter Brown and James Vallance White, Nutter’s bespoke tailoring proved very popular with rock stars and artists in the 1970s. Famous customers have included Mick Jagger, who wore one of Nutter’s suits to his wedding to Bianca, and the Beatles, three of which were wearing Nutter outfits on the Abbey Road album cover.
An exhibition at the Fashion and Textile Museum in London is currently showcasing his work.
