A Criccieth-headquartered food supplier that has been trading for more than 50 years has expanded its offering through the acquisition of a fruit and vegetable wholesaler. Harlech Foodservice has taken over Oren Foods in a deal that secures the jobs of 25 staff.
Based in Penrhyndeudraeth, Gwynedd, Oren Foods has been operating for 45 years. The family-owned company supplies fruit and vegetables to schools and care homes in Gwynedd and Anglesey, as well as serving restaurants, hotels, cafes, B&Bs and nursing homes across North Wales.
Harlech Foodservice Managing Director David Cattrall (pictured above, right, with Oren Foods Managing Director Gethin Dwyfor) said that the acquisition was a good move for the company and that adding fresh fruit and vegetables to its offering “fills a gap for our customers.”
He continued: "It’s always been our ambition to be a total range supplier and buying up a well-established and respected local business fills a gap in our range of products.”
Cattrall added that Oren will have been fully integrated into the company’s main site by September. Oren Foodservice Managing Director Gethin Dwyfor is set to remain with the business post-acquisition.
Dwyfor, who took over the business from his parents and company founders Dei and Cheryl Jones 12 years ago, said that it had always been his aim “to build the business and to have a clear succession plan.”
He continued: "My dream was for a partnership with a locally based company and that has happened and it was always going to be a condition that our staff could keep their jobs and Harlech have always given that assurance.”
Harlech Foodservice, which recently passed sales of £50 million, was founded in 1972 and has grown to cover all of North and Mid Wales, as well as the North West of England. Operating from its HQ near Criccieth, the company also has hubs in Chester, Aberbargoed, Carmarthen and Telford.
Following the acquisition, the addition of the Oren team will take the Harlech staff headcount to 300. The company has a fleet of 65 vehicles, which deliver up to 5,000 product lines across Wales, the Midlands, Shropshire and the North West.
