The historic Sneaton Castle and St Hilda’s Priory in Whitby is on the market for the first time in more than 100 years.
Located 1.5 miles west of Whitby town centre, the castle and priory are surrounded by open farmland off Castle Road. Property agency, JLL has been appointed to handle the sale.
With land totalling 59,136 sq ft, Sneaton Castle is in part a grade II-listed building and is used to provide conference facilities. The castle can also accommodate up to 100 guests.
Adjacent to the castle is St Hilda’s Priory. It is being used by the Order of the Holy Paraclete, which is due to relocate to a new priory to the west of the existing property early next year.
Charles Calvert, from property agents JLL said: "Sneaton Castle represents a unique opportunity for any buyer and we're excited to be bringing it to market for the first time in more than 100 years. Its proximity to Whitby make it more attractive both in its current business function and for potential re-development.
"Subject to the usual planning consents which will have to be obtained by the new buyer, a number of development opportunities will be possible, although as the property includes a listed building, any development including change of use must be sympathetic and appropriate to the built fabric of the building and the setting. Both properties lend themselves to a range of possible uses including residential, hotel, healthcare, offices and leisure facilities."
The castle and priory have not been to market since 1915.
