Sun, 18 Nov 2018 | BUSINESS SALE
A Kent childcare group has been acquired by a chain of day nurseries operated by a national children's charity. In a deal arranged by Abacus Day Nursery Sales, a specialist division of Blacks Business Brokers, Action for Children has purchased St Bart’s Day Nurseries from its founders Liz Norris and Terry Hooper.
St Bart's consists of three childcare settings: St Bart's House and St Bart's Out of School Centre in Sandwich and St Bart's Nurseries at Smile in Ramsgate. All three locations are rated 'Outstanding' by the childcare regulator, Ofsted.
The business was established in 2000 by Ms Norris and Dr Hooper and, over the past 18 years, has grown to offer more than 150 childcare places, employ 40 staff and generate annual turnover in the region of £1 million. The founders now plan to retire.
Following the deal St Bart's House, St Bart's Out of School Centre and St Bart's Nurseries at Smile have become part of Spring Nurseries, a childcare group owned by Watford-based Action for Children. Spring Nurseries is a national operator with multiple childcare settings around South East, East Anglia, the Midlands and the North East, as well as Merseyside, North Yorkshire and Moray, Scotland.
Chelsea Melnyk, sales negotiator at Abacus Day Nursery Sales, arranged the deal and saw it through to completion. She said, "I am really pleased to have been able to get this sale over the line and I wish Ms Norris and Dr Hooper a happy, and well-earned, retirement.
"They have built up a fantastic business, with all three sites rated 'Outstanding', and I am sure it will go from strength to strength under its now owners. I would like to wish the staff, children, parents and Action for Children all the very best as they begin this new chapter in St Bart's Day Nurseries' history.
"The market for day nurseries is really buoyant at the moment and 2018 has been an excellent year for Abacus. More childcare businesses are coming onto our books all the time and completions have been gathering pace, with a number of great deals making it over the line in the last few months, from single-setting leasehold transactions to larger freehold businesses like St Bart's."
