Kids Planet, the UK’s third largest nursery group, has acquired a family-owned business based in the Merseyside area. The acquisition of Waverton Day Nurseries, which operates four settings, takes Kids Planets’ total number of nurseries to 132.
Waverton Day Nurseries was founded in 2013 by mother and daughter Tracey Jenkins and Cheryl Taylor. The firm’s first setting was the Waverton House Day Nursery in Wavertree, Liverpool, before it subsequently expanded into Whiston (Waverton Cottage Day Nursery), Kirkby (Waverton Kirkby Day Nursery) and Knowsley (Waverton on Safari Day Nursery, which is on the grounds of Knowsley Safari Park).
The four nurseries are highly rated, with one rated as Outstanding by Ofsted and the other three rated as Good. The nurseries offer a total of 342 childcare places.
Kids Planet CEO Clare Roberts commented: “We are delighted to welcome the four well-established Waverton nurseries into the Kids Planet group, developing an even stronger support network within Liverpool, alongside our existing high quality nurseries in the area.”
“The acquisition comes after we saw many synergies with the Waverton nurseries, in our joint values and in keeping children’s best interests at the heart of all that we do, and we look forward to supporting the following nursery settings and teams as they integrate into our family group.”
The sale process was handled by Redwoods Dowling Kerr, alongside the educational legal team at Setfords. The Setfords team was led by Helen Wong, who commented that the UK nursery sector had seen “unprecedented” deal activity in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Wong added that she expected the rate of dealmaking to increase further, as more owners put their businesses up for sale as a result of “economic uncertainty, spiralling utility costs, staff shortages and the nervousness of a recession on the horizon.”
