Encomara, a specialist floating wind engineering firm, has been acquired by Inverness-headquartered energy firm Aurora Energy Services. Encomara, which is based in Inverness, provides expertise in floating wind, mooring and subsea systems.
Post-acquisition, the company will benefit from Aurora Energy Services’ investment and scale, enabling it to accelerate the development and commercialisation of its SQUID technology system. The SQUID system aims to reduce both cost and risk in offshore floating wind deployment.
Aurora Energy Services CEO, Doug Duguid, commented: “Encomara’s SQUID system is a step-change in floating wind development and this acquisition aligns perfectly with our technical strategy.”
“SQUID allows operators to modularise and industrialise offshore construction and combined with our fabrication and engineering capability, it gives Aurora a unique position in the market.”
“We are committed to providing key investment in the SQUID system to develop prototypes, in extensive offshore testing and roll-out to market, as we believe this is a true game-changer and it supports our ambition to lead in the energy transition.”
Following the acquisition, Encomara’s UK team will relocate to Aurora House in Dyce, while maintaining their original brand and product identity. The company's consulting business will continue to operate as usual, while benefitting from greater scale, resources and reach.
There will also be significant integration at leadership level, with Encomara Executive Chairman Ian Donald and CEO Raymond Semple both joining Aurora’s board and executive leadership team, with Semple assuming the role of Chief Operating Officer at Aurora’s Houston office.
Ian Donald commented said that the deal provided Encomara with “the ideal platform to accelerate our roadmap and bring the SQUID system to more markets, more quickly.”
Ian Cobban, a co-founder of Encomara, added: “I’m very excited to see the Aurora and Encomara teams move to commercialise the SQUID system, which will become a key part of the new Floating Offshore Wind (FLOW) delivery model.”
Burges Salmon’s Corporate and M&A team in Edinburgh, led by partner Malcolm Donald, provided advice on the transaction. Malcolm Donald said that the acquisition was a deal that “strengthens Encomara’s position in the offshore floating wind market but which also aligns with Aurora’s vision for innovation and expansion.”
