An award-winning vineyard in Yorkshire has been brought to market by property consultancy group Savills with an asking price of £800,000.
The Somerby Vineyard and Winery, sprawling across 12.5 acres near Barnetby, produces red and white wines that are stocked in Waitrose. Comprising of two modern steel portal framed buildings, the property supports a lean space in between for storage and a fully established and functional winery.
The vineyard consists of roughly 9,000 vines with a mixture of Pinot Noir, Rondo and Solaris varieties, with the potential for a further 3,000 Pinot Noir vines. Beyond this, the property has the capacity to vinify 20,000 litres with space for an additional 150,000 litres if needed.
The current owner of Somerby Vineyards, Bill Hobson, has won a number of awards, including Gold and the best small producer prize at the 2014 UKVA awards, and Bronze at the International Wine Challenge 2018.
Marketing the vineyard is Sam Thomas, a farm agent at Savills Lincoln, who said: “Producing on average 26,000 bottles of white and red wine each year which are stocked in Waitrose stores, the vineyard has also recently started production of its own brand cider and has plans to create a sparkling wine range as the local soil types are ideally suited.
“The majority of the existing vines are around ten years old giving them another 60 to 70 years of quality cropping left and grape yields reached two tonnes per acre in 2018 matching UK average yields.”
Hobson, who is now looking to retire, commented: “Having enjoyed 12 years building an award-winning vineyard I have decided that the time has come to retire and pass the baton to the next generation of English winemakers, who I hope will get as much enjoyment out of it as I have.”
