BBC Wales has put its Cardiff headquarters up for sale following 47 years at the Llandaff location.
The decision forms part of the broadcaster's plans to relocate to a purpose-built centre elsewhere in the Welsh capital. At the moment, the BBC has said that five or six sites are under consideration but the move is not expected to be finalised until 2018.
Ann Bulford, managing director of BBC Operations and Finance, explained that the “ageing infrastructure” at the Llandaff site has prompted the broadcaster to look elsewhere for a new location.
The building was built in the 1960s and first began operating as the BBC's broadcasting centre in 1966. Princess Margaret officially opened the building in 1967. Since then the building has hosted a number of landmark occasions for the Welsh division of the BBC, including the start of BBC Radio Cymru.
BBC Wales is looking for a site that can offer approximately 140,000 sq ft of office and studio space, after deciding that looking elsewhere was a preferable option to refurbishing the Llandaff site.
Director of BBC Cymru Wales, Rhodri Talfan Davies, commented: "We will now work with our property team and strategic partners to identify our preferred site and to prepare a detailed business plan that provides the best possible value-for-money for BBC licence fee payers."
The move will leave a desirable piece of commercial property available in the Welsh capital. So far the broadcaster has not revealed a price for the building but further details of the sale are expected in the coming weeks.
